Planning a calmer visit to Furzey Gardens

At Furzey Gardens, everyone is welcome to explore in their own way. Some visitors like to follow every path. Some prefer a shorter visit. Some need regular pauses, quiet corners or time to settle before moving on.

There is no one right way to enjoy Furzey.

This guide may be particularly helpful for neurodivergent visitors, people with additional needs, SEN families, carers, or anyone who would benefit from a calmer garden experience. Whatever brings you to Furzey, we hope these tips help you plan ahead with confidence.

Choose a quieter time to visit

June and early July can be a gentler time to visit Furzey, after May half term and before the school summer holidays begin.

Weekdays during term time are often a good option for visitors who prefer more space and a quieter atmosphere. If possible, allow enough time so your visit doesn’t feel too rushed.

Some visitors may only want to stay for a short time. Others may enjoy a longer wander with plenty of breaks. Both are welcome.

Take the garden at your own pace

You do not need to follow a set route or see everything in one visit. You can wander a little, pause when needed, return to a favourite spot, or simply sit and enjoy the surroundings.

Path winding around trees

If you are visiting with someone who may need more time to become familiar with a new environment, it can help to plan a gentle visit rather than a full day. You might choose one or two things to focus on, such as finding fairy doors, visiting the tearoom or discovering nature.

Places to pause

Quiet pauses can make a big difference to a visit. Across the garden, there are benches, shaded areas and peaceful corners where you can stop for a while. These spaces can be useful for resting, resetting or simply taking in the garden without needing to keep moving.

The tearoom can also be a helpful break in the day, offering time to sit down, have a drink or something to eat, and decide what you would like to do next.

Gentle sensory moments in the garden

The garden is full of gentle sensory experiences that can be enjoyed at your own pace, whether you are walking the paths, sitting on a bench or taking a quiet break in a peaceful corner.

You might notice birdsong in the trees, the cool shade on a warm day, the scent of summer flowers, the texture of leaves and bark, the movement of insects among the plants or the sound of footsteps along the woodland paths.

Our summer trail, Galactic Furzey, can also be enjoyed as a sensory experience. As you explore the trail, there are colourful hanging displays to spot, gentle chimes to listen out for and imaginative space-themed features to discover. Visitors can take their time, pause between portals and enjoy the trail at their own pace.

For some visitors, taking time to focus on these details, whether natural or part of the summer trail, can help the garden feel calming, reassuring and grounding, creating space to relax and enjoy being outdoors.

Asking for help

Our team wants visitors to feel welcome at Furzey. If you have questions before you arrive, or if there is something that would help make your visit easier, please get in touch before your visit or speak to a member of the team when you arrive.

Planning ahead can help build confidence, especially if you are visiting somewhere new.
