Joe: Growing at Furzey since 1995

20 January 2026

Joe has been attending Minstead Trust since 1995. Over that time, he has seen the organisation change and grow, while remaining a constant presence himself.

As Joe puts it, ‘I started in 1995. I see people come and go, it’s nice. New people, new staff.’
For Joe, these changes are a positive part of life at Furzey, bringing new relationships and opportunities to learn.

Joe enjoys being active and working outdoors. ‘I like working down the Lodge grounds’  he says, and one of the highlights of his week is time spent walking. ‘I like going for a walk, Wednesday afternoon with Mike.’
Being outside matters to Joe, especially when the seasons change.

Spring and summer are his favourite times of year. ‘I like spring and summer better, when it gets busy,’  he explains. The warmer months bring more activity and more responsibility, which Joe loves.

One of his favourite tasks is watering.

I like watering in the summer, the plants need water, more water. I feel very happy when I’m doing the watering.’

He remembers one particularly hot year with humour: ‘It was so hot one summer, I had to water myself!’

Learning and variety are important to Joe. He values the different skills that people bring into the organisation. ‘Everyone has different skills. I learn new thing every year.’

He also enjoys moving between tasks and spaces. ‘I would say my favourite thing is meeting the people, new students, new students and spending time in different work areas. I like to work in different work areas and workshops.’

Today, Joe was planting, a task that brings together his love of the seasons, learning, and hands-on work.
Today I was potting on the plants.’
Looking back on his contribution, Joe says simply, ‘I feel quite proud of all the plants.’

Joe’s story reflects long-term involvement, practical contribution, and steady learning. His experience shows how Furzey Gardens provides continuity while still offering change, responsibility, and meaningful work over time.
