Jason and Dan: Finding independence through work

21 January 2026

Jason and Dan work together regularly in the nursery at Furzey Gardens. Over time, they have developed confidence in themselves and in each other, and are now empowered to work away from instructors, independently. They organise tasks between them and use the radio to stay in contact, checking in when they need guidance and continuing independently the rest of the time.

They often take on practical work such as leaf raking, working steadily throughout the morning. This way of working shows their ability to make decisions, communicate clearly and manage tasks without the need for close supervision. These skills are used daily in the nursery and carry through into other parts of life.

For Jason, this growing independence has supported a move from residential care into supported living.
He says, ‘I feel more independent.’ Dan also lives in supported living, and the two regularly visit each other at home, spending time together as great friends. The independence they practise at Furzey is reflected in how they manage life outside of work.

Jason also describes how Furzey affects him day to day. He says he feels ‘nice and calm and peaceful’ when he is there.
The routine and the trust placed in him help create that stability. When asked about his favourite jobs, he says ‘all sorts’, reflecting the range of work he is able to take on.

Jason and Dan’s experience shows how consistent support and responsibility in the nursery contribute to confidence, independence and everyday skills.
