Furzey Gardens wins award for Outstanding Contribution to the Visitor Economy

Furzey Gardens is delighted to announce its triumph at last night’s New Forest Brilliance in Business Awards, where it was honoured with The Balmer Lawn Hotel Award for Outstanding Contribution to the Visitor Economy.

This prestigious accolade celebrates the New Forest garden’s enduring commitment to supporting its local vibrant economy, improving its sustainability, and fostering community spirit.

Furzey Gardens is a charity garden open to the public, it supports dozens of people with learning disabilities each week to learn new skills, build independence and improve their lives.

The recognition highlights Furzey Gardens’ dedication to creating a family-friendly attraction that welcomes people of all ages. Throughout the year, the gardens host an exciting range of events, from outdoor theatre performances to children’s activity trails.

The on-site tearoom further enhances the visitor experience, offering delicious food and drink made with locally-sourced products, and showcasing a selection of unique items crafted in partnership with New Forest producers and artisans.

Sustainable gardening practices have been prioritised, with rainwater harvesting introduced in the nursery and a transition to battery-powered equipment to reduce reliance on fossil fuels. Additionally, compost used in the gardens incorporates New Forest bracken from Forestry England.

Jay Powell, Director of Furzey Gardens, said: ‘This award is real recognition of the passion we have for supporting local producers and suppliers, offering affordable and special days out for local people, and increasingly becoming more sustainable.

‘We are so proud to be contributing to the beautiful and thriving New Forest.

‘It means so much to all the amazing staff, volunteers and the people we support – a real outstanding achievement.

Furzey Gardens also works to connect its visitors with the wider New Forest community. Through partnerships with local hotels and visitor centers, the gardens promote other attractions in the region, fostering collaboration that strengthens the local visitor economy. Earlier this year, the gardens represented the New Forest at the RHS Hampton Court Garden Show, introducing the area’s unique attractions to a national audience.

Furzey Gardens is open daily until Christmas Eve, with a family craft trail ‘How to Train a Reindeer’ running throughout. Find out more at www.furzey-gardens.org
