EXHIBITION OPENING ON 1st JULY FOR THE MONTH
KEN HAY - POTTERY

Ken’s interest in making pottery was generated by living and studying in the ‘Potteries’ area of Staffordshire where in Newcastle-under-Lyme he was fortunate enough to be shown how to throw pots by Charlie Weir, a master potter with Portmeirion. Later, Ken studied with Ollie Kent at the West of England College of Art in Bristol and more recently with Greta Berlin and Anne Pearce in Lymington. He has exhibited in Bristol, Lymington and Milford-on-Sea.
Ken takes inspiration from the Bernard Leach school of Pottery with its Japanese influence. Leach’s characteristic glazes of rich brown tenmoku and pale green/blue celadon feature on many of Ken’s pots.
As a consequence of Ken’s scientific background and love of nature, glazes became of great interest with the use of wood ash from the New Forest trees and old fruit trees featuring in some of his work. Different clays also change the character of the pots.
Occasionally Ken uses porcelain clay which produces a finer and more delicate finish.
All the pots exhibited are fired in a reduction kiln and are either stoneware or porcelain making every piece an individual and unique expression of the ceramic art.
